Our volunteer-led, self-funded community garden on the Pontcanna Permanent Allotments site includes several fruit trees, vegetable beds/raised beds, and two large polytunnels. We also have bee hives, two ponds, a composting area, tool and potting sheds, an office, a toilet, and a shelter where we share lunch and tea/coffee during breaks.
We run two sessions a week (Wednesdays and Fridays, 10:30-14:00), with the aim of growing produce to share amongst volunteers and providing a centre for learning about sustainable horticulture to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Children are welcome if accompanied by a responsible adult.
We are looking for new volunteers who are committed to attending regularly and willing to take more responsibility over time, with a view to becoming lead volunteers in the future. Some gardening experience/knowledge would be advantageous, but we welcome anyone with a keen interest in growing food sustainably.
Depending on the season, the main gardening tasks open to volunteers are sowing, repotting, planting out, weeding, pruning, composting, mulching, and harvesting. There may also be opportunities to get involved with bee keeping.
Lead volunteers take on additional responsibilities, including opening and closing the site, maintaining health and safety, supporting less experienced volunteers, keeping the shelter and workspaces clean and tidy, running committee meetings, and maintaining member records. Each session requires two lead volunteers, including at least one person with a current workplace first aid certificate. Those lead volunteers on duty are asked to arrive by 10:00 and stay until around 15:00.
All volunteers/lead volunteers should aim to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels equally valued and respected, irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
