|Every Wednesday at around 16:15 the café at Oasis
Refugee Centre is filled with the smell of freshly
popped popcorn, there’s children passing around
oranges and huge slices of watermelon and parents
and guardians having a natter over hot beverages.
It’s cinema day.
For the last 18 months, Welcome Cinema Kids has
run as a free weekly event for newly arrived asylum
seeking families. Welcome Cinema Kids! is a chance
to integrate with the community and support
services through the magic of cinema. Throughout
the film there’s freshly made popcorn, pizza,
delicious fruit and drinks.
We started the cinema club after we realised the
hostels where refugee families are placed when
they first get to the UK have no provision for
children. No toys, no school, no entertainment.
During what is an incredibly stressful and confusing
time for both parents and children, we try to
provide a weekly opportunity for the kids to be kids
and the parents to have some time out.
Your job will be to hang out with the children, get to know the parents and make sure everyone is having a good time!
Cinema takes place every Wednesday 3.30pm –
6.30pm. We’re looking for someone who can come
help out each week and take on some extra tasks
like organising food shopping, passing information
onto other services and support with organising.
Someone experienced in and passionate about
working with children and families.
