What is Millennium Volunteers (MV)?

Millennium Volunteers is a UK-wide Government-backed initiative to encourage young people to volunteer.  You sign up to the scheme and then record the number of hours you spend volunteering in a year and receive certification at three stages:
  1. 50 hours = Certificate
  2. 100 hours = Certificate
  3. 200 hours = Award of Excellence signed by the First Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government and an MV T-Shirt or beanie.

Who is eligible?

Anyone aged 16 – 24 years old.

What are the benefits?

By volunteering you can develop employability skills and interpersonal skills e.g.
time-management, commitment, confidence, team-working &/or team-leading etc.

In addition, the Millennium Volunteers Award looks good on UCAS application forms/ a CV because of its good reputation.  To hear what employers and colleges have to say about Millennium Volunteers open the 'What do employers think?' document in the Millennium Volunteers section of www.wcva.org.uk

How long do I have to achieve required hours?

About a year but you are allowed to backdate up to 50 hours worth of voluntary work done in the three months before you signed up.

What kind of volunteering can I do?

You can do any volunteering that’s available to you, through VCS or elsewhere, from sports coaching younger children, to mentoring at school, to your DOE Service to fundraising…

Can I claim expenses?

Sometimes!  VCS does not pay expenses, however, many of the projects and organisations we have registered do.  If you volunteer at a Millennium Volunteers’ Delivery Partner Project then they will definitely pay your expenses (ask us for a list of current projects).

Does travel time count towards the hours?

Yes, travel time can be included.

What about training?

Yes, as it is a necessary condition of your volunteering.  All initiation and training should be counted, as should any time spent planning, researching or preparing events and activities or anytime clearing-up afterwards.

Are there any rules?

Yes:

  • Your voluntary work must take place within Britain.
  • It must not be done as part of a curriculum e.g. Welsh Baccalaureate.
  • It cannot be work experience.
  • It must benefit the community i.e. volunteering must take place in a project that is open to all of the community and not to private members only.
(If you have any doubts as to whether an activity counts towards Millennium Volunteers contact the outreach worker at VCS for friendly advice and guidance.)

For more information, or to register as a Millennium Volunteer contact us and ask to speak to the Outreach Worker.
