WHAT IS VCS?

"Atthe heart of VCS is the belief that everyone has something to offer toour society and that everyone should have the opportunity to getinvolved in improving their community by their voluntary action."

Peter Trevett, VCS Manager

Voluntary Community Service (VCS) was the first ever Volunteer Centre to be established in Britain and has been helping Cardiff volunteers since 1964.

Originally VCS was involved in setting up a variety of practical projects in Cardiff like helping pensioners with their gardening or decorating, and building one of the UK’s first adventure playgrounds. (We even did flood relief work in the early days!).

Nowadays such practical service delivery is done by other projects which have grown up in the meantime. Instead, VCS acts as Cardiff’s recruitment and support centre to promote volunteering with the hundreds of charities that are active in Cardiff.

WHAT DOES VCS DO?

VCS is a charity funded by Cardiff County Council and the Welsh Assembly. It is run by a Management Committee made up of local volunteers and volunteer organisers.

We offer advice on all volunteering matters to anyone who needs it – whether volunteer or volunteer organiser.

VCS recruits volunteers from all sections of society and refers them to their own choice of the wide range of projects in Cardiff who are seeking volunteers. (A bit like a job centre for volunteers). There are  around 500 projects on our books. We interview about 1700 volunteers each year to help them make their choice of project. Most of the volunteers are seen at the VCS premises on the Ground Floor of Brunel House, 2 Fitzalan Road, Cardiff, CF24 0EB. However, about 500 per year of these are seen on an outreach basis. We also maintain information on Cardiff volunteer opportunities on the all-wales website at www.volunteering-wales.net.

So, if you want to know more about the vast range of things you could be doing in Cardiff, contact us for free, impartial, experienced advice.
