There are 4 basic steps to beginning
volunteering:
Step 1) Think about what you’re looking
for...
Asking yourself a few basic questions before your
visit to VCS should help clarify what voluntary work you are looking
for:
- How much time do I have and
when would I be available?
- What sort of groups would I
be interested in working with?
- What interests and experience
do I bring?
- Do I prefer working
one-to-one or in larger groups?
- What do I want out of the
volunteering experience? (Fun? New skills?)

help).
Step 2) Visit the Cardiff
Volunteer Centre or book an outreach appointment...
The Volunteer
Centre is open from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm (last admission
3.15pm). You can
come to our office whenever it is convenient for you – there’s no need for an
appointment. However, there are several, long
flights of stairs leading up to our office so if this could be
problematic for you then please contact us and ask to arrange an outreach
appointment. Similarly, if there is another reason you cannot make it to our
office or you would like to book a confidential consultation we will also be
happy to book you an outreach appointment.
We recommend you allow about an hour for a friendly
and informal consultation with an experienced member of the VCS team. Your time
will be spent chatting about what voluntary work you're looking for, being shown
various options and taking time to browse through the registered volunteering
opportunities at you own leisure if you wish to.

Step 3) Get in touch with your chosen organisation
If you find your
perfect project straight away then that’s great! We’ll try to make contact with
the organisation there and then and arrange for them to send you an information
pack or for you to visit the project to see what you think. Some people prefer
to take some information away and think about it before contacting the
organisation directly themselves. Others may visit us a couple of times before
they make their decision.
Step 4) Start volunteering!
It’s as simple as that! If you experience any
problems or have second thoughts we’ll be here for you.
