Cardiff Volunteers Dinner 2010
Cardiff Volunteer Co-ordinators Network (CVCN) The third Cardiff Volunteer Co-ordinators Network (CVCN), run by VAC and VCS, was held at the Star Centre in Splott and focused on the topic of involving disabled people as volunteers within an organisation. The network consisted of a networking activity, workshop, information sharing and lunch. At this event CVCN worked in partnership with Disability CAN DO and was well attended by 43 Volunteer Co-ordinators from 39 organisations. Kate Howell, from Disability Can-Do delivered a two-hour workshop which explored the issues of involving disabled people as volunteers. The workshop involved all participants working together on case studies, scenarios, terminology and how to overcome barriers. For further information on involving disabled people in volunteering please contact Disability CAN DO; www.disabilitycando.org.uk
CVCN takes place quarterly and each is packed full of information, guidance, discussions and networking. It is a great opportunity for Volunteer Co-ordinators to share good practice, receive updates on relative information and raise the profile of volunteering within Cardiff. If you would like to become a member or to find out more about CVCN please contact Sara Jackson, Partnership & Projects Officer, VCS on 02920 227625 or alternatively email her at cardiffvounteerorganisers@yahoo.co.uk
DO IT FOR CARDIFF review
The event took place on the 31st March 2010 just outside Queens Arcade in Cardiff city centre and it was a success. The event which was in partnership with VCS, VAC and the Cardiff Volunteer Co-ordinators Network was aimed to promote volunteering within Cardiff Community. The energy erupted throughout the day with a African drumming workshop (Batuwe Beatz), local radio stations Rookwood sound and Glamorgan radio. There was 33 charitable organisations representatives and over 70 organisations information at the event talking to the public about the vast amount of opportunities available to them.

So why volunteer you might ask? Volunteering not only helps charitable organisations (many of which could not run without volunteers), your local community and our society as a whole it can also influence your life for the positive. Volunteering can improve your self-esteem, lead to employment, build up your CV, allows you to meet new people and enables you to 'give something back'. Why people volunteer "It gives me a sense of achievement, and a part of something special" "Gaining new skills and CV points!" "I want to give something back to society and make it a better place to live in – keep me occupied and make friends"
Did you miss it? Then have no fear because VCS are here, we run a free and friendly impartial advice and information drop-in-service Monday-Friday (10am-4pm) where you can find out more about the 400+ opportunities we currently have. If you are unable to visit our drop-in-service then click on www.volunteering-wales.net and find out what's available in your area. Sara Jackson Partnership & Projects Officer
